Overall Performance and Functions

The first thing that you might observe about the Traeger Pro 780 is the size. For all the 2019 models from this brand, the number in the product’s name refers to its cooking surface. Therefore, the Traeger Pro 780 comes with 780 square inches for you to cook.

Despite this size, this is still one of the easiest grills to set up, considering its size. The grill comes with most of its already assembled for you, and once you have done the little that remains for setting up, you can start feeding pellets and begin cooking.

One of the main functions of this model is the Wi-Fi connectivity and the app. But what does a grill need Wi-Fi for? This is a good question that many have wondered. In real-life use, though, you will discover that there is a lot to like about this function. It comes in so handy that we were left wondering what we had been doing with grills that didn’t have the function.

One major advantage of having this connectivity and the app is that you have the ability to determine cooking times and temperatures precisely. Additionally, when the time and temperature are reached, the app pops up with a notification. With this function, you don’t need to constantly check the progress of your cooking.

Because of the size, it isn’t the best grill for tailgating; however, it is highly functional and allows you to cater to a relatively large size of eaters. The overall performance is incredible and marks this as the grill to beat. Temperatures can be set remotely, and the grill does not need to be constantly watched.

Surface Cooking Area

Traeger Pro 780 Review

The Traeger Pro 780 comes with a pair of surface cooking areas. First is the main cooking area of 570 square inches and the secondary cooking area of 210 square inches. A total of 780 square inches of surface cooking area means that you have more than enough space to cook your food. You can prepare food in a single batch without the surface area feeling cramped.

While this means that this isn’t the most portable of units, it serves perfectly if you need to serve a large number of people. This large surface area has received loads of praise from users around the world.

Fuel

The Traeger Pro 780 comes as a pellet grill, which clearly indicates that it is powered by pellets. Using wood pellets as fuel might seem tricky and might involve a steep learning process; it comes with its advantages over the other common types of fuel.

For one, with wood pellets, you don’t need to move tanks or charcoal bags around before you can enjoy the wonderful smoked flavor from your meat. Another good thing about wood pellets is that they are a rather efficient source of power.

With this fuel source, you will use about a pound for an hour of intense grilling. With a hopper capacity of about 18 pounds, you don’t have to frequently refill the hopper with wood pellets.

Hopper Capacity

The hopper refers to the box on the side of the grill where you pour the seasoned wood pellets. With wood pellets in the hopper, you can determine the flavor of your food and the temperature of the grill.

Well, as we said earlier, this product has an 18-pound capacity hopper. There is also a large screen attached to the hopper to stop large clumps from getting stuck in the auger.

Additionally, the hopper has a clean-out door which makes it easy for you to change the pellet flavor and replace it with another type of wood pellet.

Ease of Use

Several features make this model one of the easiest pellet grills to use in its category. Some of the best things about this model include the WIFI and app control. With this feature, you don’t have to be physically present to monitor whatever you are cooking. However, it should be noted that you need to be physically present to get things started on the grill.

One of the best features of this unit, and one that certainly adds to the ease of use, is the controller. This is an excellent control panel that we found easy to use. The screen and layout options are intuitive and easy to use. It offers you one-touch ignition, so you can say goodbye to the challenge that often arises when trying to start a fire.

We have tried out several types of grills, and without a doubt, we believe that this grill is easier to start than the traditional types of grills (electric or charcoal).

Safety Features

Traeger Pro 780 Review

The WIFI feature that we have talked about earlier proves to be an excellent protective feature. One reason for grill fire accidents is that the cook walks away from the grill for a longer time than is safe. With the app and WIFI features, you can still keep an eye on whatever you are cooking.

However, that is not the only safety feature that you will find on this model. The controller comes with a pair of safety features that will help you to operate the grill correctly. The first feature is the low-temperature alarm. This alarm goes off when the temperature stays below 125 degrees. Once the temperature goes below this for about ten minutes, the function will switch off all the internal parts of the grill.

Another safety feature is the high-temperature alarm. If the temperature reading goes above 550 degrees, the machine will have all the internal components switched off.

The design of the grill also ensures safety. For one, it is stable and will not be easily tipped over. And wood pellets are some of the safest fuel sources that you can use on a grill.

By following the instructions for use set out by the manufacturer, you can rest assured that the Traeger Pro 780 will give you safe use.

Portability

If there is one issue that some have with the Traeger Pro 780, it will likely be the portability. This is not a portable option for you. It is a large and heavy grill that weighs up to 146 pounds and has dimensions of 49 (W) x 27 (D) x 55 (H) inches.

Therefore, it is not a grill that can be easily transported from point to point. It’s too heavy for one person to carry.

While it isn’t the most portable you can find, it is a good choice for anyone interested in grilling for a large number of people and who want to control their grill remotely.

Maintenance

No matter the machine that you use, there is a need to carry out frequent and proper maintenance. Well, the Traeger Pro 780 also needs to be regularly maintained for it to continue working in the best conditions.

One of the things to do when maintaining a grill is to clean it often. Well, this product is quite easy to clean. The design allows you to remove the ash from wood pellets to be vacuumed off.

The manufacturer recommends that you clean it out every twenty hours or thereabouts. To clean, you need to remove the grating, drip pan, and the heat baffle. The easiest way that we found to clean is with a vacuum cleaner.

After cleaning all the detached parts, you can easily set everything back in place.

Durability and Warranty

Traeger Pro 780 Review

As this is a high-quality product from a reputable brand, it is not surprising that this is a very durable product. It is made of high-grade aluminum parts and offers good resistance to impacts. The wheels are all-terrain wheels made of high-quality materials that will prove handy wherever you go.

The grill is also coated with porcelain which is a material that resists corrosion and makes the unit pretty easy to maintain. Due to the overall build, you can be sure of resistance to the elements, heat, and other destructive forces.

In terms of warranty, Traeger has provided a 3-year warranty here. Therefore, you are covered in case of damage to the product or when you require replacement parts within this period.

Key Features

The Traeger Pro 780 comes with certain unique features. Here are some of the most important ones:

  • WIFIRE Technology: This is the WIFI technology that makes this grill stand out from many of the grills on the market. With this feature, you can control your grill whenever and wherever via the Traeger App. It allows you to change the temperature, monitors the cook time and conditions of your food, choose from over a thousand recipes, and so much more.
  • Temperature Controller: The controller on this grill has been praised as one of the most intuitive and easy to use. The controller lets you set precise temperatures for consistent cooking results whenever you use the grill. From our testing, this controller makes the grill as easy as using an oven.
  • Meat Probe: There is a built-in meat probe here that will show you the temperature of your food without needing to open the lid. This comes in very handy when cooking different types of foods.
  • All-terrain wheels: Wheels might not be important to some, but they are very important to many folks because of where they live. The all-terrain wheels on this product make it easier for you to move it around the yard without breaking your back. The wheels are solid and will move smoothly over different terrains.
  • Removable Drip Tray: The drip tray comes in pretty handy because it prevents fat from dripping on the burner – which can affect your cooking. The fat is collected by a removable drip tray that is easy to wash.

Price Tag

In view of the different features that the Traeger Pro 780 has, it is not too surprising that it is a relatively expensive product. The Traeger Pro 780 costs $999.99 on the official website. It might even be more expensive if you buy from other sources.

While this is certainly expensive, we strongly believe that it offers good value for the cost. The premium design leaves no doubt as to the cost of the product. Also, it is built solidly, highly reliable, and has features that you will not find on cheaper grills on the market.

PROS CONS
  • Easy to use
  • Wi-Fi controller and app
  • All-terrain wheels make it easy to move
  • Wide temperature range
  • Quick heating times
  • Highly durable
  • Premium design and construction
  • Two cooking surfaces
  • Easy to set up
  • App connection needs Wi-Fi
  • Too modern for ‘old-school’ pit-masters
